I did some searching for the shoe pattern and found out I need to "host" a shoe building party in order to get the shoe pattern. The minimum amount of people for a party is ten, so I'm assuming they will give me 10 shoe patterns if I order the party package. I may look for other people to make shoes with me or just make all of them.
I looked through clothes that I am planning on giving away and found some "blue" jeans. Next step is to find the pattern for the shoes!
Because I still don't know how to sew, I have decided to make shoes from jeans. Sole Hope is an organization that delivers jean shoes to Uganda. Their purpose is to effectively put in place preventive methods to combat diseases that enter through the feet and to create a positive physical and spiritual difference in the lives of individuals in impoverished communities. This is their website for more information: http://www.solehope.org/
Yesterday, my family and I attended The Drop Box Movie. It is about a pastor who lives in South Korea and saves children from being thrown out on the streets. The Pastor, Lee Jong-rak, designed the drop box to be a warm bin, lodged in a wall, that allows mothers to deposit their children without being seen. More than 300 unwanted babies have been saved by the drop box in South Korea. He has adopted 14 of the drop box children and the rest of the kids have been put up for adoption. Unfortunately the film was only showed for a short period of time, but because it was a huge success, the movie will be shown again in special theaters on March 16th.
Over the weekend, my family and I went to Kohl's to find Taina shoes. We found a cute pair of Keds that we thought would hold up for a long time. Since Taina's favorite color is green, we also got her a pair of fun, green socks. I hope she enjoys her shoes and socks!
On Sunday, Redeemer Lutheran Church started a project called Hearts for Haiti. Members of the church could grab a heart off a tree with a child on it. There was an item on the bottom of the heart that the child had asked for so the member of the church could buy the item for the child. I decided to get a heart because it went along with my 20 Time Project. I chose Taina's heart, and she wants some shoes.
On January 22, I gave my pitch for my 20 Time project. I was prepared for my presentation, but I got nerve as soon as I stood in front of the class. When I finished, Hannah said I pronounced two words wrong, but otherwise the presentation was good. I must have done well because I ended up getting 110% in RDS for my Pitch Presentation. The power-point I used to present my idea can be found below. Today, I got our family's sewing machine out of storage. My mom does not even remember the last time it was used so I was very thankful when it turned on. In order to work the sewing machine, I had to read the MANUAL! It might seem like a lost tradition, but it was necessary to read it. The manual lead me step by step to thread and set up the sewing machine. The hardest part for me was bringing the bottom thread up.
Without going to my nana's over the summer, I would have struggled more with the sewing machine. When I went to my nana's, she sewed a curtain for me that I never got around to sewing. I watched my nana sew so I had an idea of how to work the sewing machine. Down below is a picture of my first stitch that I am extremely proud of. Over the weekend, I have collected materials to be used in making the dresses. Since my family does not have used patterned pillowcases, I had to search for pillowcases elsewhere. I found three pillowcases at Goodwill for $1 each. My church, Redeemer Lutheran Church, has collected pillow cases for this same project so I acquired three pillow cases from them as well. A few years ago I bought fabric for a curtain that I decided not to make so I have the fabric that was going to be used in the curtain. I found excess t-shirt material from making a t-shirt quilt with my grandma. The t-shirt material will be used to decorate and personalize the dresses. Here is a picture of all the materials that I found over the weekend:
